Unicat 2.4 S hits the water.

The first Unicat 2.4S to be completed was launched and did it's first test sail yesterday. Equipped with a Chinese lug rig, the dinghy performed well, and proved that the Unicat really is the dinghy that can do it all. She pointed well, and was very easy to sail as well as very stable and forgiving.  Handling was predictable with no surprises and the boat felt very solid.

The test conditions ranged from almost no wind in the morning, to more than 20 knots in the afternoon and the Unicat handled it all easily but showing a preference for stronger winds. Reaching and running in strong winds, the Unicat was able to keep up with much larger racing dinghies such as the Starling.

The only changes to the design to come from testing is a longer daggerboard to help stop lateral motion, and possibly a new seat layout for the sailing version.

First Eagle 4.6 Trimaran now for sale!

The Eagle 4.6 trimaran that I built to promote the design is now for sale., The boat comes with a custom made road trailer made by Reid trailers, and I will also throw in an extension tiller handle. The outboard motor is NOT included. She is about a year old now but has only been used for sea trials and promotion of the design.

She is well built from Meranti plywood,  fully sealed with glass on the outside and resin inside and has proven to be very low maintenance.

16M Cruising Proa Concept

Posted by James Brett on April 15, 2011 at 6:05 AM Comments comments (5)

This is my interpretation of the ultimate offshore cruising boat, and a boat I hope to build for myself someday. It is 16.2m long (53 feet) and 9.3m wide. Displacement is around 7000kg. The bridgedeck cabin includes a double sea berth, full galley and saloon, while the main hull contains two double cabins, and the head.

The workings of the boat are the same as my Free Radical design, using the same well proven rig and rudder systems. Construction will be in plywood with ply/balsa laminate in the bulkheads.

More information to come soon....

Congratulations to Ken Ormandy!

A Sailing Unicat!

The Unicat 2.4-S

After many requests, I have designed the new Unicat 2.4 - S, A sailing version of the popular Unicat 2.4 dinghy.

Designed to be simple, practical, and fast, the 2.4-S retains all the features of the original design, the hull, seats and consruction are the same, but the boat can now be sailed as well as rowed and motored.

The excellent stability of the Unicat hull, combined with a large 4.5 square meter Lug sail make this a powerful sailboat. The hull is easily driven, yet is capable of a high hull speed, so this boat will perform well in all conditions.

The mast is un-stayed, can be built from wood or aluminium tubing, and the whole rig can be set up easily in minutes. The daggerboard is offset to the port side, to keep it clear of the aerated water in the middle of the inverted vee. The rudder is mounted in a case and retracts vertically, but it is held in place with shock cords so it will kick up safely if run aground.

This simple, affordable sailboat is suitable for sailors and builders of all skill levels. Stitch and glue construction makes this boat very easy to build.

Plans are available printed in A2 format or as a PDF file that you can print yourself.
